RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the interrelations between joy at work, vocational identity, and COVID-19-related latent variables. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design was adopted to survey 253 registered nurses through nursing organizations and social networking sites during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Structural Equation Modeling through Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) was employed to accurately analyze and estimate relationships among joy at work, vocational identity, and COVID-19-related constructs in compliance with published standards and guidelines. RESULTS: Thirty-one items received convergent validity measures to represent the five study constructs related to joy at work, vocational identity, and Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic: Meaning, Engagement, and Growth (MEG), Compassion, Sensitivity, and Respect (CSR), Trust, Support, and Flexibility (TSF), Vocational Identity Questionnaire (VIQ), and Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic (CI). The generated model exhibited good model fit and consistent quality indices. The data fit statistically with the model: (Average Path Coefficient = 0.195, p < 0.000); Average R-Squared = 0.156, p < 0.003; Average Adjusted R-Squared = 0.151, p < 0.004; Average Variance Inflation Factor = 2.193 (within the ideal range); Average Full collinearity VIF = 2.388 (within the ideal range), and Tenenhaus Goodness of Fit (GoF) = 0.329. The perceived Work life Impact of COVID-19 pandemic (CI) was a significant predictor of joy at work constructs (MEG, CSR, and TSF) and VIQ with direct effects. It also exerted a negative influence over MEG and TSF, but positively on CSR and VIQ. Notably, joy at work constructs significantly mediated the effects of CI on VIQ. CONCLUSION: A structural model was developed that offers insights and a parsimonious explanation for the interrelations of COVID-19, joy at work, and vocational identity variables. The pandemic unquestionably influences the nurses' perceived joy, sense of calling, and meaning in life's work, and joy at work enhances nurses' work-life worth during challenging times. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: An increased understanding of nurses' joy at work during challenging times can potentially influence work culture, informs individual nurses, nurse leaders, and healthcare systems in all professional domains of practice and provides the foundational information to identify barriers to joy and strategies that enhance joy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To develop and test the model of association of social connectedness and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy and to describe their social connectedness through photo-elicitation. BACKGROUND: Social connectedness has been empirically associated with several well-being outcomes. However, little is known on the association of social connectedness among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. METHODS: Employing a mixed-methods design following the good reporting of a mixed methods study guideline, the quantitative approach involved 230 consecutively-selected patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy who answered a three-part survey. From these patients, six informants participated in the photo-elicitation and key informant interview sessions. Gathered data were quantitatively analyzed using structural equation modelling and qualitatively processed using polytextual thematic analysis. RESULTS AND FINDINGS: Social connectedness had a positive influence on social well-being (ß = .22, p = .008) and emotional well-being (ß = .20, p = .023); however, it had a negative effect on functional well-being (ß = -.20, p = .007). The overall model revealed good model indices: χ2 /df = .82, RMSEA = .01, GFI = 1.00. Qualitative analysis culled from photo-elicitation uncovered five interconnected themes yielding the Honeycomb model of social connectedness which was composed of correspondence, cohesion, constitution, convergence and corroboration. CONCLUSION: HRQoL among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy is a multi-factorial health construct affected by social connectedness. The presented model emphasises the importance of social connectedness and paves way for the development of appropriate strategies to promote social connectedness among patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The findings provide impetus in the modification and development of appropriate practices, policies and strategies in promoting social connectedness. These approaches are geared towards patient-family empowerment and health education techniques to ascertain that assistance from significant others is provided without limiting the patient's autonomy or independence.

RESUMO

AIM: We examined health-promoting lifestyle in undergraduate nursing students and its potential as a predictor of health-promoting behaviors and basis for curriculum improvement. BACKGROUND: A health-promoting lifestyle is essential among students for their future nursing roles. Development requires the internalization of healthy behaviors beyond the cognitive learning domain. METHOD: Guided by Pender's health promotion model, this multisite, cross-sectional, and descriptive-correlational study surveyed 1,634 undergraduate nursing students in Bali, Indonesia. RESULTS: The regression analysis revealed that student profiles explained the 5 percent variation in their overall health-promoting lifestyle. Perceived health status was observed to be a significant predictor ( p < .05) of health-promoting behaviors among a diverse sample of undergraduate nursing students. CONCLUSION: The study findings emphasize the role of nursing education in instilling healthy behaviors among undergraduate students and the importance of integrating student-centered and context-responsive health promotion strategies into the nursing curriculum.

RESUMO

Background: The World Health Organization estimates that between 80,000 and 180,000 medical personnel perished as a result of COVID-19. Although studies about nurses' organizational commitment during the COVID-19 pandemic have been conducted, the sources of motivations and resilience strategies of nurses in providing a quality healthcare service amidst the COVID-19 pandemic have yet to be explored. Objective: This study aimed to investigate how motivation and resilience influence nurses to serve and cater to patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed approach was used in this study between July and August 2022. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), Work Extrinsic and Intrinsic Motivations scale (WEIMS), and Garbee and Killacky's Intent to Stay Scale (GKISS) were used to measure resilience, motivation, and intention to stay, among 50 nurses within Metro Manila. Quantitative data were analyzed using quantile regression, while qualitative data from eight participants were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The majority of the nurses were working 12 hours and above (52%) and earning a bi-weekly income of PHP 15,001 to 20,000 (96%). The GKISS scores of most respondents indicated their likelihood of remaining in their current profession was moderately low (Mdn = 12.5; IQR = 12-14). It was also found that there was no sufficient statistical evidence to conclude that intention to stay was associated with resilience (p = 0.914) and work motivation (p = 0.560). The qualitative strand of this study explored the significant influences of motivation, resilience strategies, and sources of intention to stay among Filipino nurses while facing the COVID-19 pandemic. The primary motivations of nurses lie in family, passion for work, and career development, while the resilience strategies include adaptiveness, time management skills, and self-fulfillments. On the other hand, the intent to stay greatly lies in serving the people and the country. Conclusion: This study concludes that positive and negative resilience and motivations from different facets of the social life of Filipino nurses, including passion, familial ties, patient care, and faith are the antecedents influencing the intention to serve in the healthcare service. In terms of staying for an extended period in a nursing career, the study found that institutionalized interventions, adequate compensation and benefits, and a good workplace are determinants of staying longer in the Philippines as Filipino nurses.

RESUMO

A common medication safety strategy involves a Web-based medication management system. Still, there is no consensus about its acceptance and usability, even more so among nurses in the Philippines. Thus, this pilot study used a mixed-methods design to explore the nurses' feedback (N = 26) about Web-based medication management system in a telehealth hospital. Their acceptance, perceived usability, and experience of Web-based medication management system were assessed using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology model, Post Study System Usability Questionnaire, and semistructured interview guide, respectively. Results showed nurses agreed on their acceptance of Web-based medication management system (M = 3.72 [SD = 0.69]) and slightly agreed on its usability (M = 5.18 [SD = 1.02]). It also generated the Nursing Capsule of Web-based medication management system use that combines the quantitative model with age and length of practice as significant predictors and the qualitative interaction vortex with three themes (i.e., engaging, enabling, and exciting). These findings emphasized the need for effective technological adaptation to advance nursing practice and patient care.

RESUMO

Effective continuing professional development (CPD) involves learning and being fit to practice, knowing both the how and the why and putting both into practice. This study explored the antecedents and consequences of a developed simulation-based CPD program for nurses and determined its effectiveness and a structural equation model of simulation-based CPD program was also developed. Fifty-three (53) registered nurses participated and utilized descriptive evaluative, descriptive comparative, descriptive correlational and quasi-experimental with post-posttest designs. The results showed as indicated from the model that antecedents such as accessibility with β=.282 (P=.013), organizational support β=.217 (P=.046), and sustainability β=.529 (P=.000) have a direct effect on simulation-based CPD program. Hence, these will have a direct effect on the consequences with β=.571 (P=.000)

RESUMO

The study aimed to determine the prognosticators of career growth and development among nurses in tertiary hospitals in Region III, Philippines. The study included 223 nurse-leaders from nineteen (19) participating hospitals as participants via census sampling. The tool utilized for the study was an adopted survey questionnaire that underwent validation before its distribution. Using SEM-PLS through WARPLS, data were analyzed and presented. SPSS v. 21 was used for computation of demographics. Results showed that there is significant result when it comes to knowledge in relation to career growth and development (path=0.217, p<.05, f2=.167). Second, professional values affect the career growth and development of nurses (path=0.564, p<.05, f2=.450). Lastly, competency reveals that it does not affect the career growth and development among nurses (path=0.037, p<.05, f2=.028). It was found that all the three prognosticators of career growth and development (knowledge, professional values, and competency) among nurses have strong significant relationships to each other

RESUMO

Pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) continues to be a public health problem and is still the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines despite the preventive and control strategies done by different agencies. This study aimed to explore PTB in the workplace particularly in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, an area with limited studies. Descriptive comparative and correlational methods were used to assess the employees' level of knowledge and level of agreement to myths about PTB. 243 employees were randomly selected to participate in this study. T-test of independence, one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey were used to test for the significant and specific differences among variables. Results showed educational attainment (p = 0.007) and length of service (p = 0.008) to affect the level of knowledge, while educational attainment (p < 0.001), length of service (p = 0.013) and average monthly income (p < 0.001) seem to affect employees' level of agreement to myths. No correlation was found between the level of knowledge and myths. This study revealed a good knowledge among employees but are still prone to myths about PTB. Proneness to myths poses a threat to the effectiveness of PTB control and preventive strategies. Policy makers and top management of BPO industries may consider these pieces of evidence to focus on the factors that may have affected knowledge and susceptibility to myths on PTB. Alignment of health policies with the needs of the company must also be taken into consideration to address the existing gaps appropriately

RESUMO

In many countries, the rate of aging in their population is rapidly increasing. It is expected that this increasing trend influences the number of patients in bedridden states who have difficulty moving their extremities, such as those patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The patients are limited in many aspects of their daily lives; this includes not seeing what is outside of their rooms, affecting their quality of life (QOL). Thus, this study aims to evaluate the Remote-controlled Drone System using the Eye-tracking device through the Internet (RDSEI) to improve QOL for patients in bedridden conditions. The novel RDSEI is proposed and developed by the Kai laboratory. The RDSEI consists of a drone, a transmitter, a control screen, an eye-tracking device, a video capture device, a server computer, and a client computer. The subjects of this experimental evaluation of the RDSEI were five healthy male adults (average age: 20.6 years old). Experimental results indicated that all the subjects could control the drone easily by using this system, although there were delays, blurriness, and freezing of the video. Therefore, it was concluded that by using this system, the subjects could control the drone by only their eye movements, thereby enabling them to see the outside world through the drone's camera. In the future, the patients will be able to control the RDSEI from remote locations and converse with persons in remote locations

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to examine the proposed control method of the assist suit with a Velocity-Based Mechanical Safety Device (VBMSD) for patients with difficulty moving their lower legs by themselves. The proposed control method for the assist suit assists the patients as if the patients move their knee joint under zero gravity. A physical simulation model is used to examine whether the gravitational torque of the subject's lower leg and foot was canceled by the torque generated by the assist suit. Experimental results indicated that the gravitational torque of the subject's lower leg and foot is canceled by the torque generated by the assist suit. The control of the assist suit was not adversely influenced by the VBMSD. That is, the VBMSD did not prevent the control of the assist suit. The proposed control method makes the assist suit assist the patient in moving his/her knee joint in a zero gravity-like environment. However, a weight of 3 kg was used instead of an actual patient in the experiment. Experiments with actual patients should be conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method in clinical use. Furthermore, it will be necessary to take into consideration the patients' general conditions and symptoms

RESUMO

The aim of this study is to identify processes, examine insights, and develop a theory on the concept of mentorship among deans of Nursing colleges in Region IV-A. Data collection was through semi-structured interviews using aide-memoire. Audio recording and note-taking were done for the data accuracy. Validation was utilized by performing re-interview and through observation to the same KI. Data analysis done was cool and warm, along with the execution of expert analysis, guided by the procedures and phases of Strauss and Corbin.1 The mentor-mentee relationship resulted in 4 phases: Searching, Engaging, Trialing, and Shaping (S.E.T.S.), which details how mentorship exists and engenders the ideal working environment. These phases characterize the most definite relationship between the mentors and mentees, specifically the deans and their faculty members. This study further ignites desirable effects and outcomes holistically and to enhance more mentorship style and how a mentee will transcend positively

RESUMO

Humanoid robots are increasingly deployed in various health facilities to complement long-term care in Japan. Although this technology influx is still in its infancy, many health providers are optimistic about its capabilities. Thus, it is crucial to investigate its preliminary utilization and effects as precautionary measures in understanding the use of humanoid technology in healthcare. The study intends to describe the rehabilitation care experience for older patients with schizophrenia and/or dementia in the use of Pepper humanoid robot. A qualitative case study was conducted to explore the rehabilitation recreational activities of older patients with schizophrenia and/or dementia (n = 9) in geriatric health facilities. After securing ethical clearance, observational data were recorded and analyzed using a case-oriented understanding and framework of reaction, interaction, and benefaction. Reaction focuses on their attitudes and impressions toward Pepper. During the rehabilitation and recreational sessions, interaction deals with the relationship between older patients with schizophrenia and/or dementia, Pepper, and providers. Lastly, benefaction reflects the actual health outcome of the reaction and interaction with Pepper. As observed, humanoid robots can elicit simple and individual instructions for simple activities (e.g. exercise) and start the simple conversation (question-answer loop) with its subjects. However, deploying humanoid robots in long-term care requires numerous improvements in robotic technology to elicit an increase in communication and other physical activities, motivation, and a sense of calmness from its clients

RESUMO

Healthcare for the increasing senior population is a significant challenge. To address this problem, the use of healthcare robot is increasingly being recognized to have strong potential in addressing older adult and psychiatric patients' healthcare and welfare needs. The purpose of this preliminary study is to evaluate the changes in the autonomic nervous activity of an elderly patient with schizophrenia during upper limb range of motion (ROM) exercises led by Pepper (SoftBank Robotics) with the application program of Care Prevention Gymnastics Exercises (Pepper-CPGE) made by Xing Company in Japan. A Pepper-CPGE-led three-minute radio gymnastics program (Radio Exercises #1, consisted of three types of exercises) and instructions were developed. The normal aging 69-year old schizophrenic subject followed instructions from Pepper throughout the intervention. Electrocardiography (ECG) records, heart rate, acceleration score, and ROM exercises of upper limb were collected and analyzed using the GSM's Bonaly Light instrument and Image-J analysis. (1) The high-frequency (HF) (indicative of parasympathetic nervous activity), and low-frequency (LF)/HF ratio (indicative of sympathetic nerve activity) were increased in reference from the baseline data before the exercise stretching the chest. (2) The momentum decreased as the ROM of shoulder joint flexion declined. Declines in both parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous activity were observed. Also, (3) when the exercise "bend the body forward" was performed, the HF and LF/HF also decreased. Evaluation of robot-based rehabilitation exercise program effectiveness by the ROM exercises image analysis and autonomic nervous activity is essential for the futurist programming of ROM exercise among patients with schizophrenia

RESUMO

The issue of older adults' care is becoming a serious concern in Japan, which has a rapidly aging population and a low birthrate. The development of robots is pushed forward as a measure to compensate for the healthcare worker shortage. The purpose of this paper is to consider the potential legal issues of caring healthcare robot (CHR) for older adults' care. A CHR must recognize the speech, face, and presence of older adults, and make judgments and relay information based on acquired information. CHRs fulfill the caring function by being close to patients, to know them deeply, and to look after them. Therefore, communication functions by advanced artificial intelligence based on caring in nursing are essential for CHRs. The ability to maintain and improve the activities of daily living (ADL) of older adults is to facilitate activities through bidirectional information relay. Furthermore, without guarantees on the safety and ascription of responsibilities, the introduction of CHRs in clinical practice will not proceed. As laws differ from country to country, it is necessary to examine Japanese policies and related laws when using CHRs in Japan. Currently, there are no central rules on information security. In Japan, the law is made after a case has occurred; thus, dealing with novel issues as they occur will not have the benefit of legal guidance. Creating a broad legal framework or taking preventive measures at an early stage is needed. Therefore, as a first step, establishing guidelines for the use of CHRs will be valuable

RESUMO

Health promotion provision is regarded as an integral component of the health professional's role, particularly for nurses working in a primary healthcare context. This study investigated the health-promoting lifestyle patterns among nurses working across all community healthcare centres termed as Puskesmas in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. A parallel mixed-methods design employing the adapted Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II questionnaire and semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted. Quantitative data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20, and qualitative data from eight telephone interviews were subject to in-depth thematic analysis. It was found that the Puskesmas nurses showed sufficiently positive health-promoting lifestyle patterns, except in the domain of physical activity. Based on particular socio-demographic characteristics of the participants, the means of several Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II subscales were significantly different. Six key themes emerged from the thematic analysis. The integration of quantitative and qualitative inferences suggest that there is a connection between the nurses' personal and professional health promotion practice; it was characterised by the notion of being imperfect role models and a blurred boundary between the nurses' personal and professional identity

RESUMO

Human caring, founded on a Japanese caring perspective and nursing theory, fosters innovative and creative ideas for an aging society. The growing reality of health care dependency on technology presents a temptation to give robots utility as partners in nursing practice. Human caring expressed in human-to-human relationships, and also between humans and nonhumans, is a futuristic model for health care, with humanoid robots as major supporters. The purpose of this article is to explore this disruptive technology, along with its functions and characteristics. Tanioka's Transactive Relationship Theory of Nursing is shared along with its relevance for addressing technological disruptions in health care.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Interprofessional learning (IPL) is increasingly recognized as a promising strategy in addressing the burgeoning challenges in healthcare. Its assessment remains to be perplexing and requires accurate measurements. Thus, this study intended to develop a valid and reliable reflective tool in assessing IPL as a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) outcome. METHODS: A one-group post-posttest pre-experimental design with tool development was employed to establish the validity and reliability of the "Inventory of Reflective Vignette-Interprofessional Learning" (IRV-IPL). This tool was developed from an extensive literature review and designed with three segments to assess interprofessional competencies before, after, and what if scenarios using vignettes. After it was validated by education experts (n = 5) and written consent forms were signed by the participants, the IRV-IPL was pilot tested among healthcare professionals (n = 10) for analysis and improvement. During the actual implementation, it was administered to healthcare professionals (n = 45) who participated in a university-provided CPD event. Collected data underwent validity and reliability testing. RESULTS: IRV-IPL generated excellent internal consistency (α = 0.98), and across all segments of collaboration (α = 0.96), coordination (α = 0.96), cooperation (α = 0.96), communication (α = 0.97), and commendation (α = 0.98). Items exhibited significantly positive large correlations (r > 0.35, p < 0.05) in all segments showing beneficial measures for postdictive validity in recalling prior interprofessional competencies, and predictive validity in estimating interprofessional learning as an outcome of CPD and alternative interventions. CONCLUSION: This study provided a piece of groundwork evidence on the use of IRV-IPL as a reflective assessment tool for interprofessional learning in CPD contexts. Further studies are essential to explore the educational utility of IRV framework in crafting relevant assessments and to establish construct validity of IRV-IPL using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses.
